A New Chapter & Seamless Transition at Hastings House
A Letter To Our Guests
Shan and Donald Cross created Hastings House Country House Hotel in 1981, and in 1986 joined Relais & Chateaux, an association of hotels in idyllic places with extraordinary service. In 1996, Jerry and Bonny took over their legacy to assume proprietorship of this uniquely beautiful property. Since then, we have assigned the responsibility for managing the hotel to several people, the first of which was Mark Gottaas. As a boutique property, our identity is built on the personal connections we share with our guests, and today we want to share some bittersweet but exciting news.
After 6 years of dedicated service, our General Manager, Alan Lawley has decided to retire. We are immensely grateful

To ensure our high standards of hospitality continue, please join us in welcoming General Manager, Michael Coughlin. Michael joins us with over 30 years of experience at as new numerous properties, including the Villa Aerie, Sooke Harbour House, Le Cordon Bleu and Stonehouse Inn here on Salt Spring.

Many of you will fondly remember Michael from his sixteen years (1996-2011) in Hastings House dining rooms. He returnsto us after a remarkable journey into the heart of Italy, where he completed his PhD and published his 2020 book on historic 16th-century Italian villas and wineries. Michael’s return brings a personally curated wine program that celebrates our incredible British Columbia terroir, while introducing a dialogue with fine Italian and French labels. Michael will be working closely with Executive Chef Marcel Kauer to take our dining experience to new heights.
To ensure a seamless transition throughout our accommodations and 20 acres of pasture and forest, Michael will be working side-by-side with Alan over the next few weeks. We look forward to introducing you to Michael in person during your next visit. Please join us soon to celebrate this new chapter of the Hastings House story.
With gratitude and warm wishes,
Bonny O’Connor and Jerry Parks
