The couple must obtain a Marriage License from the government office on a non-holiday weekday. No previous residency in Canada is required; both traditional and same-sex marriages are permitted. Transportation to and from government office is included in the package. For religious ceremonies, a horse and carriage can also carry the bride and groom from nearby churches to Hastings House for the wedding reception. Only one member of the couple is required to apply for the license, with identification for both. One of two marriage commissioners (similar to a justice of the peace) on the island will perform the civil ceremony.
