The art of winemaking and viticulture is relatively new to Salt Spring, yet once again the island seems to attract dedicated people who are passionate in their pursuit of superior quality. A few residents on the island grow grapes for their own private vintages and two beautiful wineries overlooking Burgoyne Valley opened in 2002.
Garry Oaks Winery is rapidly building an excellent reputation for its winemaking, winning multiple awards at the Northwest Wine Summit for its Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and the red wine blends, Labyrinth and Fetish. Other varieties are Gewurtztraminer, Zweigelt and Leon Millot. It is the first winery in the province to age wine in Garry Oak (Oregon White Oak) barrels.
Salt Spring Vineyards is a totally organic wine grower, blending grapes grown on site with those from Vancouver Island and the interior of BC. The vineyard producesa vast range of wines including Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Blanc de Noir, Chardonnay, Ortega and its famous Blackberry Port.
Mistaken Identity Vineyards believes that skill, care and passion for their land and craft will be evident in their offerings. Thier care reveals itself in many ways and their vineyard on Salt Spring Island is Certified Organic.
